We wanted to share with you an exciting response to our recent Call for Submissions for imPERFECT CITY logos, which urged citizens to participate in the city by designing an emblem representing the concept of utopia.
Proposed by 41Utopia (Donald Dunham and Annette Giesecke), this logo is based on a quote from German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716): “The present is pregnant with the future.”
Giesecke and Dunham explain their design as follows:
“Aside from the typographic/acronymic representation of imPERFECT, the logo is comprised of an ellipse with a solid circle placed within its boundaries. This alludes to the “perfection” of the circle as a “perfect” seed within the more “imperfect” elliptical form (a circle may be defined as a special ellipse—both can also be derived from conic sections). The black circle within the green elliptical field could also be seen as a void or as a solid form (ou/no place, or eu/good place—Thomas More’s Utopia word-play). “Green” is etymologically derived from the Middle English and Old English word grene, which, like the German word grün, has the same root as the words grass and grow. It is also the color most commonly associated with nature, life, and hope.”
